CAGAYAN DE ORO–– During the CheckMySchool (CMS) cycle 6 in 2016, we came across a school whose pupils were in need of school bags and supplies. We decided to do an outreach activity to respond to this issue and called it the SaGIFT Aral Project. The term “SaGIFT” is a translation from the Tagalog word sagip (save/rescue). We changed “gip” to GIFT as we consider the school supplies and our entire effort as gifts to them.

Because of the positive outcome of SaGIFT Aral, we decided to make it an annual activity. To sustain the project, we tapped several organizations to provide financial and in-kind assistance. To date, SaGIFT Aral has distributed educational kit to four elementary schools and a day-care center.

In CMS cycle 7, we chose Midkiwan Elementary School in Barangay Bayanga to be the recipient of SaGIFT Aral. This time, we would be distributing personal hygiene kit. We invited the officer-in-charge of the GROUP Foundation, Inc., Cristy W. Gamos, to join the activity. The GROUP Foundation served as CWGG’s mentor and partner in community and development works since 2011. Through them, we were able to tap other government agencies, specifically the Local Governance Resource Center (LGRC) of the Department of Interior & Local Government (DILG) Regional Office 10. Their support proved to be valuable to CheckMySchool operations in Cagayan de Oro City.

On our way to Midkiwan, OIC Gamos saw how remote the school is from the city. We detoured from the national highway and entered a one-lane rough road.

During the distribution of personal hygiene kit to the pupils, OIC Gamos told us to come up with the same activity to be sponsored by GROUP Foundation as they will celebrate their 34th year anniversary. They realized the kids also need soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and towel to stay clean and fresh in school.

On October 15, 2018, we went to Langaon Elementary School, Municipality of Baungon in Bukidnon. We were joined by board member Mei Yoshi and GROUP staff. Four medical students of Xavier Ateneo School of Medicine also joined us and facilitated lectures on proper handwashing and toothbrushing.

A quiz bee and a drawing contest were held. The pupils also showcased their talent in dancing, which delighted the visitors.

Teachers of Langaon ES were very happy because their school was chosen to be the recipient of SaGIFT Aral.

For us in CheckMySchool Cagayan de Oro, this experience serves as a reminder to keep our stakeholders at arms length for they are our valuable partners in improving the learning environment of our schoolchildren.
